CHRISTO: EARLY WORKS & UNREALIZED PROJECTS

opening 15.09.2021

dates 16.09.2021 – 05.10.2021

In celebration of L’Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped by Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Alessandro Possati and Zuecca Projects, in collaboration with Christopher Taylor and Cahiers d’Art, are pleased to present “Christo: Early Works & Unrealized Projects“.

The exhibition, hosted in a special offsite location at 27 avenue Matignon in Paris, runs from September 16 to October 5, 2021.

On the occasion of L’Arc de Triomphe Wrapped, a posthumous project by Christo more than 60 years in the making, this exhibition presents a selection of unrealized projects, soon-to-be-realized projects, and early works from the ‘50s and ’60s by Christo and Jeanne-Claude.

Exhibited together, these early works – Craters, Wrapped Magazines, Wrapped Packages, and Store Fronts – trace the development in Christo’s practice from two to three dimensions, and his journey from creating objects to creating space.

Alongside these works are preparatory studies, drawings, collages, and scale models of projects both unrealized, and soon-to-be-realized – projects on which the artists worked for many years. Among those in focus are Wrapped Trees, Avenue des Champs-Elysées in Paris (1969), Pont Alexander III, Wrapped in Paris (1972–90), The Abu Dhabi Mastaba in Abu Dhabi (1977–2012), The Daiba Project in Tokyo (1996), and Over the River in Idaho and Colorado (1992–2010).

From early wrapped objects to monumental outdoor projects, Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s artworks transcend the traditional bounds of painting, sculpture, and architecture.

“Christo: Early Works & Unrealized Projects” continues Christo’s collaboration with Cahiers d’Art, with whom the artist realised the final projects of his lifetime: a dedicated issue of the Cahiers d’Art Revue, the Hommage à l’Étranger series of handprints, and Show Cases, Show Windows & Store Fronts — 1963–1966, an exhibition presented in conjunction with the long-awaited retrospective at the Centre Pompidou, Christo and Jeanne-Claude – Paris!

The works will all be available to purchase, with proceeds to benefit both the L’Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped project, and the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Foundation.
